- The population* of South Korea is projected to drop from 51.67 million persons in 2022 to 49.63 million persons in 2042. Among the total population, the share of Koreans is projected to decrease from 96.8% in 2022 to 94.3% in 2042. Whereas, the share of foreigners is projected to increase from 3.2% in 2022 to 5.7% in 2042.
- The working age population of Koreans is projected to drop from 35.27 million persons in 2022 to 25.73 million persons in 2042. The working age population of foreigners is projected to rise from 1.47 million persons in 2022 to 2.36 million persons in 2042.
- The elderly Korean population aged 65 or more is projected to increase by 1.9 times for the next two decades from 8.89 million persons in 2022 to 17.25 million persons in 2042.
- The total dependency ratio* is projected to increase from 41.8 persons in 2022 to 81.8 persons per 100 people of working age in 2042.
- The population with migrant background* is projected to rise from 2.20 million persons in 2022 to 4.04 million persons in 2042. Among the total population, the share of the population with migrant background is projected to rise from 4.3% in 2022 to 8.1% in 2042.
- Among the population with migrant background, the school-age population aged 6-21 is projected to increase by more than 1.5 times for the next two decades from 330 thousand persons in 2022 to 500 thousand persons in 2042.
