■ Over the past decade, the number of crimes steadily declined. Particularly, the special law crimes such as traffic crimes declined substantially. As for criminal law crimes, heinous crimes (felony) increased, whereas traffic crimes and violent crimes decreased. Of the five heinous crimes, i.e. murder, robbery, sexual assault, arson, and assault and injury, only sexual assault trended upward.
■ Over the past decade, the rate of child abuse victimization increased significantly (approximately 7.5 times), whereas the experience rate of brutal crime victimization in children and youth trended downward overall.
■ Over the past 20 years, unnatural deaths from accidents, suicides and murders declined for all age groups. Compared to women’s, men’s unnatural death rates showed a greater decline. Still, in 2022, the unnatural death rates slightly increased in both men and women.
■ Property damage and loss of life due to natural disasters had largely decreased overall since 2006 and slightly increased in 2018-19 before trending downward in 2021.
■ Over the past two decades, the number of fire incidents and deaths from fires declined, property damage from fires steadily increased due to the rise in property values. However, in 2022, the numbers of fire incidents and casualties increased.
■ Traffic deaths steadily declined over the past decade with overall traffic accidents trending downward since 2020. In 2022, both traffic accidents and deaths decreased.
■ The overall perceived safety of our society steadily increased, with the fear of walking at night decreasing.
