2024 Population and Housing Census (Register-based Census)

[Population] - As of November 1st, 2024, the population of South Korea was 51.81 million persons, which increased by 0.1% (30 thousand persons) from 2023. - The working age population aged 15~64 amounted to 36.26 million persons (70.0%). This figure showed a steadily decreasing trend from 2018. - In 2024, the population of the Capital Area was 26.31 million persons, which occupied 50.8% of the total population. This figure showed a steadily increasing trend. [Household] - As of November 1st, 2024, the number of households totaled 23.00 million households, increasing by 1.2% (270 thousand households) from the previous year. - Among general households, 1-person and 2-person households accounted for 65.1% (14.52 million households). The average household size stood at 2.19 persons in 2024. - Among general households, relative households accounted for 61.3%. Households residing in apartments accounted for 53.9%. [Housing] - As of November 1st, 2024, the number of housing units totaled 19.87 million units, rising by 1.7% (330 thousand units) compared to 2023. - As for the year-on-year percent change in housing units by province, Daegu recorded the highest figure of 3.1%. Whereas, Seoul recorded the lowest figure of 0.5%. - Housing units constructed 20 years ago or more accounted for 54.9% of the total housing units. Housing units constructed 30 years ago or more accounted for 28.0% of the total housing units. - Houses with a semi-basement or basement unit and those with a rooftop room amounted to 261 thousand units and 34 thousand units, respectively. 97.3% of houses with a semi-basement or basement unit were in the Capital Area, and 90.6% of houses with a rooftop room were in in the Capital Area. [Characteristics of the population and households] - In 2024, 1-person households marked 8.04 million households (36.1%), rising by 2.8% from 2023. - In 2024, the multi-cultural households amounted to 439 thousand households, which showed an ever-increasing trend from 2016. - The disabled population (Koreans) was 2.61 million persons.
